The most common positioning mistake in padel, why the dead zone costs you points, and the simple fix that buys you time to choose your shot.
There’s one spot on a padel court where you can’t volley, can’t defend, and can’t reset. Most new players stand there for an entire match.
The dead zone
The most common positioning mistake in padel is parking yourself just in front of the service line. Not committed to the net, not back in defense, stuck in the in-between. There’s a name for that strip: no man’s land, and pros leave it the second they end up there.
Most players drift in from two directions: pushing up too fast from the back, or getting bumped back from the net by a lob. Either way they freeze, they wait, and they get punished. You’re too far back for the net game, so volleys dip at your feet before you can step in with weight forward. And you’re too far forward to defend, so a ball off the back glass arrives before you can turn and set your feet.
The fix
Take two or three steps back, behind the service line, and center yourself between the back glass and the line. That’s defense, and now you have time. The ball comes off the glass at hip height, and you get to choose your shot instead of reacting to it.
